Wyoming’s first ever statewide water sampling regulations took effect. Oil
drillers are now required to conduct base-line groundwater sampling prior to
drilling new wells, and then again twice after. The new regulations help to
insure groundwater is not being contaminated.
A year
before drilling, oil drillers must sample the water of at least 4 surrounding
water sources (stream, well, etc.) within a half mile of the proposed well. The
water will then be sampled again from the water sources 1 to 2 years after
installation of the wells production.
